CRAFT, PTE. WILLIAM Reg. # 976762

William John Craft was born September 4, 1898 in Burks Falls, the son of William Craft and Betsy Jane Cottingham.

At the time of the 1901 census, the family was identified as living in Armour Township. At the time of the 1911 census, the family was again identified in Armour Township – specifically on Lot 2, Concession 5.

William John Craft married Ellen Louise Ward in Middlesex, England in June of 1919.

At the time of the 1921 census, the couple including son Alexander, age 2 and James age 1 lived in York Township. (They had three more children.

William died July 20, 1958 in Ancaster. 

In WWII William served in the Veteran; Guard.

William served in both World Wars.

In his Attestation papers signed November 22, 1916 William identified that he lived in Russell, Manitoba where he was a farmer.

He identified his next of kin as his father, William Craft of Burks Falls.

 

In his Discharge Certificate, William is identified as having enlisted in the 200th Overseas Battalion on November 22, 1916 in Winnipeg.

He is identified as having served in Canada, England and France and as having received a gunshot wound to his left leg.

He was discharged as medically unfit on October 30, 1920.

William enlisted in WWI on November 22, 1916 in Winnipeg.

He arrived in England on December 7, 1917 on the S.S. Megantic. He was transferred from the 11th Reserve Battalion to the 16th Battalion and then to the 43rd Battary in the field in April, 1918.

He was wounded on October 1, 1918 at Cambrai.

In April 1919 he was granted permission to marry.

He was invalided to Canada in July 1919.

 

As the note on the preceding page notes, the wound resulted in considerable loss of bone.
